LESSONS OF LOVE

Come.

Come kiss me

Until my lips are bruised.

Call me

And I shall come to you unrestrained,

Fear no longer binds my feet.

No fear have I,

Of losing you.

No fear of heartache, I know must come,

For have I not learnt

My lessons of love from you?

There is no time

To wait and feel

The emotions of which we easily speak;

No place for the soul to yearn,

No need for unnecessary strings.

Happiness for today

Is all we seek.

Love has its utility.

When you no longer come to me,

Like you

I shall find

Others that gladden my weary heart

And bring diversion to my mind.

My eyes shall not follow you

In the crowd;

No face is distinct from the rest.

Moments of joy,

Are all I shall remember.

Those that brought them,

I may forget.

So come.

Hold me in your arms

And whisper your words of love,

False though they be,

Today’s need let them appease.

And let’s not talk

Of the ‘ever’,

For tomorrow

There shall be another,

Standing where you stand today,

His lips as ardent,

His love as transient,

His arms as compelling

And words empty of their meaning.

He shall begin

Where you left.

And I, like drift-wood

Float unheeding,

One to the other

And another,

A living symbol

Of your love and its truth.

Come,

For life is short

And time runs out.

Today is our day,

We don’t have a tomorrow.
