Look closely, look again.
Look at my eyes; the stars are fading.
Look at my lips; the roses are wilting.
What they need, you will never know;
But tell me, just once…..
Life won’t pass me indifferent;
Tell me there will be love to share
And a place called home,
Where loneliness will never knock on the door,
Where fear shall never seep through walls,
Where lurking death won’t find it abode.
Tell me I shall still see
rainbows and fragrant flowers,
I shall still have my long awaited spring,
I shall still find peace.
Tell me there won’t be
Nightmares of starving in the streets
And groping blindly in dead-end alleys.
Tell me I too can belong somewhere,
My searching eyes will
Yet find refuge from pain.
Tell me that tears shall not
Dry on my cheeks in resignation.
Tell me, I yet have an ordinary chance
Of just some ordinary happiness.
The childhood I never saw,
The youth I never had,
Bring them back to me just once.
Let my imagination take wing and fly
Over the wildest terrain;
Tell me it shall never die
In this arid plain.
Tell me the sun shall never
set on empty days,
And the night shall never
Bring its ghosts
To squeeze my heart in their icy fingers.
Let me glimpse the vast horizons
Through a tiny skylight.
Let me peep into the magic chambers of delight
Through a keyhole.
Just keep luring me
Into the world of make-belief,
Into the realms of fantasy;
Talk to me of dreams coming true,
Of heights and horizons.
I know all that shall never be
— a deception it is,
and a deception let it be.
Let me dream just for today,
Let me dream
Of rainbows and springs,
Of love and home and happiness.
Give me hope, only for today;
I shall face the real world tomorrow;
The mundane dreariness,
The ugly truth of human existence.
Not today.
Today is the day for charming lies.
I shall not believe them tomorrow.
Today, make them magical,
Make them real,
Blow them out of proportion!
False as they are,
These hours are dear to me;
For it is but the only way
I can reach what I seek.
